Breathe Carolina Discuss Musical Style and Latest Single

Breathe Carolina have been producing appalling musical content since 2007. Although Breath Carolina at one point had six members in total, the group currently consists of founding member David Schmitt and Tommy Cooperman. Before moving into a predominantly EDM direction, Breathe Carolina’s musical style mixed electronic rock, emo pop, post-hardcore, and dubstep. Some of Breathe Carolina’s blockbuster and high-ranking albums include Hell is what you make of it and Savages.

The above Savages even ranked # 1 on the US Billboard Top Dance / Electronic Albums Chart. Their most recent album, DEADTHEALBUM, was released on November 15, 2019 and marked their first release on Spinnin ‘Records and Big Beat. Additionally, Breathe Carolina released her latest track titled “IF YOU”On July 31, 2020. Teaming up with the Belgian producer Robert falcon and pop phenomenon Conor Maynard, “IF U” by Breathe Carolina is a vibrant take on Jennifer Lopez’s hit 1999 single, “If You Had My Love”. Here is One EDM’s exclusive interview with the Denver-based duo who are currently one of America’s most popular EDM groups.

Kenny Ngo: How have you been in the last few months?

Breathe Carolina: We’re fine! We worked on a lot of new music, exercised, cooked, spent time with family and tried to stay healthy until we could travel again and play shows for our fans in all security !

How was the production process for your last single “IF U”?

We went there knowing we wanted to work with Robert Falcon again because we had a great time working with him on our song “My Love”. We worked with him on the production and really right away it all started to fall into place the right way. At the same time, we knew we wanted to give it a new Dance twist. However, we also wanted to make sure it retains the essence and feel of the original.

Given current social distancing guidelines and the collection restrictions implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, how did you successfully work with Robert Falcon and Conor Maynard to produce the single?

We all come from different parts of the world and with COVID we certainly couldn’t travel to work on this in the same room. In fact, it wasn’t bad at all to do it remotely – the guys made the process super easy!

Since the track is a version of “If You Had My Love” by Jennifer Lopez, what makes it different between your track and JLo’s?

Well the original is a 90s R&B track and with that we turned it into a Dance / Pop track with a completely different production. We have Conor putting his take on vocals of course and the verses are a bit different lyrically as well. We kept the same chorus, melody, and feelings as the JLo version, because we absolutely wanted to make sure they stay the same.

You released your last album, DEADTHEALBUM, last November. What do you think of the success of the album, especially since it reached the Top 10 of Billboard Dance / electronic album sales in the United States?

The support that DEADTHEALBUM received had overwhelmed us. It had been a minute since we last had Dave sing the lead vocals and it was just a great feeling to release something that felt like such a fusion of our past and present as artists and to see it be. so well received on the other side. We’re just so glad everyone connected so strongly to it!

Before you became completely EDM, your music was mostly electro (adding post-hardcore, dubstep, and emo pop influences). How do you feel about your current musical style compared to the quirky musical style of the late 2000s and early 2010s?

We still love to bring the same energy and vibes from your seat to our new music! Our musical style has grown with us throughout our career. Throughout the evolution of our sound, we have always tried to stay as true to ourselves as possible with what we do.

Do you have any new music to release at the end of this year and / or next year?

We certainly have a lot of new music on the way before the end of the year and certainly next year too! We can’t wait for you to hear it.
