NEW BEDFORD — New Bedford musical artist Eric Santos, better known as Ewreckage, has plenty to smile about these days.

Not only did his song “Crystal Blue” debut at No. 1 on the iTunes Portugal Singles chart, but he also accomplished the rare feat of simultaneously holding the top 5 positions on that chart the week of April 18.

Only one other artist was able to accomplish this milestone, Santos noted proudly. He shares this honor with global phenomenon K-pop group BTS from South Korea.

“It was a mixture of surprise, amazement and pride,” said the 22-year-old musical artist born and raised in the whaling city, who has his roots in Porto and Madeira, Portugal.

“I’m very proud of my Portuguese heritage and it was such an amazing feeling to have my work recognized by my culture,” he added.

Behind the charts were the songs “Keep My Cool” and “Currents” from her second album Ruby and “Shvers” and “Thanks For Nothing” from her debut album Eccentric.

“The funny story is when I first hit the charts in Portugal, my song ‘Ocean’ was number 2 just below Ed Sheran’s ‘I Don’t Care’ which featured Justin Bieber. It was a big moment for me because Ed Sheeran is my favorite artist of all time. I would love to collaborate with him,” Santos recalled. “And now for my new single ‘Crystal Blue’, I was able to reach the number one and him and Camila Cabello and their song ‘Bam Bam’ was right below me on the chart. So, for me, it was a great moment to be up there with my musical idol.

Soaring up the global music charts is nothing new for Santos. His songs reached number one in about ten countries, including India, Costa Rica, Malta and Kazakhstan.

Although he is still waiting to conquer this feat in the United States, his work has nevertheless garnered widespread praise and “Eccentric” was voted “Album of the Year” by the Los Angeles Tribune.

“Ewreckage is the hidden gem of the year… This work is bathed in sunshine, worthy of a Californian summer. From pop anthems to acoustic ballads, Eccentric spans a wide range of genres, making each track unique and memorable, wrote The Tribune in its “10 Best Albums of 2020” list.

Santos said he started making music in 2018 while studying English and high school education at Bridgewater State University.

“Growing up, I was always interested in writing and I was also interested in music,” he said. “As a little experiment, I decided to try writing a song.”

His first EP was called “Saudade”.

“It was a little tribute to my heritage,” he said.

He eventually adopted the stage name “Ewreckage” as a playoff of his name Eric – E-Wreck – Wreckage.

Although it draws inspiration from a plethora of musical genres – including classic rock, funk, jazz, EDM, folk, surf rock and R&B – it does not bind to any specific musical style.

“What I do is I choose musicians that inspire me and I make songs that are similar to their vibe,” he said. “So one track on one album can be completely different from another.”

The single “Crystal Blue”, for example, was inspired by the song “You” by Benny Blanco, Marshmello and Vance Joy.

Similar to DJ Khaled, Benny Blanco and Marshmello, Santos said he recruits different singers to collaborate on his tracks.

“I consider myself a musical artist, which means I take a blank canvas, create a piece of work and modify it,” he told O Jornal. “What I mean by that is that I’m the one who writes all the songs and I have a say in the production and what the song sounds like, but I’m not really the one who sings it. “

As a result, he commissioned singers from all over the world. The “Crystal Blue” singer is from South Africa.

“I do a lot of personal scouting online,” Santos explained. “If I see someone I like, I contact them and tell them what kind of project I’m looking for. I worked with excellent collaborators.

In addition to producing music, he works as an English language development teacher at a school in New Bedford.

This time he was also responsible for the work ‘Crystal Blue’.

“It’s a homage to the Beatles and it also looks like Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid,” Santos said. “My brother works as a graphic designer, but he was really busy with school this year, so I got on the computer and put my skills to good use.

But in terms of releasing a third album, there is no hurry.

“With ‘Ruby’, I was very focused on rushing the album to try to get it out to the public. In doing that, I’m proud of what I produced, but I felt like I was ruining my creativity because I was so focused trying to rush it,” Santos said. “With Crystal Blue, what I really want to do is sit down, write something that I’m proud of, and put it on. in place. I currently have no album project.
