But the neglected genre is experiencing a renaissance recently as the birth of new trotting stars has rekindled the appeal of music across generations.
With an audience rating of up to 18.1%, an all-time high for an entertainment show on a cable channel, TV Chosun’s “Miss Trot” brought Song Ga-in out of obscurity and became a young girl. trotting diva last year.
Song’s Rise is a rare addition to the small group of young trotting singers, which also includes Jang Yoon-jeong and Hong Jin-young.
According to Genie Music, a music streaming service, streams of trotting songs jumped 74% last year from the previous year, due to a resurgence of listeners’ interest in the genre.
“Listeners in their teens and 20s tend to be glued to trotting songs that suit their own tastes, while those in their 40s and 50s tend to enjoy a wide range of trotting songs, especially those in their 40s and 50s. from well-known singers, ”Genie Music CEO Cho Hoon said in a press release.
Driven by the growing popularity of the genre, Genie Music also introduced a new top 100 trotting song chart to capitalize on the genre’s renaissance.
MC comedian and TV show Yoo Jae-suk undoubtedly deserves credit for the recent trotting boom, having launched his first musical project on the MBC variety show “Hangout with Yoo” last year.
The comedian released a trotting EP, “Bbong For Yoo”, under his stage name Yoo San-sole, the Korean name for a Chinese seafood dish, as part of the weekend TV show. .
His songs, including “Hapjeong Station, Exit No. 5”, made it to the top 100 singles charts on the music streaming service Melon Music last year, earning him, under the stage name, the first award for Rookie of the Year in his 29- year career in television entertainment at the MBC Entertainment Awards.
At a press conference last year, Yoo shed light on his fascination with the genre of trotting.
“Actually, the trotting is a really wonderful genre of music, but it hasn’t earned the reputation it deserves,” Yoo said, citing the “simplicity” of the lyrics of the trotting music as the basis for the appeal. of the kind.
“Through the show, I hope that the genre of trotting can gain popularity and that more new singers can find places to sing,” he said.
As the power of the trotting increases, more and more TV stations are launching their own shows based on the trotting.
KBS hosted a six-week project trotting competition show starting in October, “I Like Trot”, leading to the emergence of another young trotting star, Jo Myeong-seop.
In November, cable channel MBN debuted a trotting audition show, “Voice Queen,” featuring established trotting stars, like Tae Jin-ah and Kim Hye-yeon, on the show’s mentorship panel.
Earlier this month, “Mr. Trot,” a male version of “Miss Trot,” began airing on TV Chosun and became an instant hit.
